Question 141 - Circumcision: Is it right to practice
Question 141 - Circumcision: Is it right to practice
Dr. Sungenis:
May I ask you what you think of circumcision. I have been looking around at the issue, and this book is troubling me. If it’s true, it does seem that there is something quite wrong with circumcising a baby in the modern way:

John D.
R. Sungenis: John, I think it's much ado about little, in my honest opinion. I think those who are trying to discourage circumcision because it comes from the Jews, is wrong. Circumcision, in my opinion, is an honest way to deal with potential problems with the male sexual organ, namely, bacterial accummulation. Also, why bother with a bunch of skin you don't need every time you need to use your organ? I would clip it off the same way I clip my fingernails and unwanted hair.
On the other hand, if one is practicing circumcision for religious reasons, that is, one is adopting the Judaistic religion and is doing so by requiring circumcision of all males, then this, according to the Council of Florence, is wrong, since circumcision, as a religious practice, has been superseded by baptism.
All in all, circumcision is right to do, but not as a rite.

Hi Robert,
I agree that a medical reason for circumcision would be justified. It's the same reason amputation is fine...so long as the limb is diseased.
There is, however, a disagreement in the medical community on whether or not circumcision is truly needed as a preventive measure.
Therefore, I believe you can also say that *not* circumcizing an infant is also right, provided that there is no immediate medical reason to do so. After all, cutting hair and finger nails doesn't inflict pain, and they also grow back.
In Christ,
Cesar
